The CRCSI-2 Positioning Program held workshops in February 2010 for signed up members of 43pl-2 and the CRCSI-2. The purpose of the workshops was to bring together academic, government and private sector partners in an open forum to discuss the essential elements of the program and define the research program and projects and research teams. The world is on the cusp of a new era in satellite positioning. A number of new global navigation satellite systems are about to be launched. A national positioning infrastructure that takes full advantage of these technological advances in a coordinated and accelerated fashion and in a way suited to the particular needs of Australia, is a fundamental step toward spatial enablement.
Significant economic benefits will accrue through the coordinated roll out and adoption of a national positioning infrastructure, adding an estimated 1.1% to 2.1% to Australia’s GDP by 2030 through productivity gains in mining, construction and agriculture alone . By accounting for the impact on other sectors of Australian industry, such as transport, emergency services and tourism and recreation, the economic benefit promises to be even more substantial.
